Located 35 miles (50 km) north of Strasbourg and 25 miles (40 km) west of Karlsruhe, this particular BUNKER, part of the MAGINOT Line thought to defend France from invasions, was erected back in 1930 to serve as underground barracks. It offered all the facilities needed to accommodate, feed and nurse a company of soldiers during war-time: dorms, toilets and showers, a well, a boiler room, an engine room, and was fitted up for close defense and against gas attacks.
French troops occupied the "Abri" from 1936 to 1940.
